For three generations, our firm’s attorneys have fought on behalf of people who have been seriously injured by the negligence of others and wrongfully accused of crimes. Our firm has a truly unique and compelling story. Our founder, James J. Powell Sr., was orphaned at age 11 when both of his parents were killed in 1888 in a train wreck known as the Mud Run Disaster. At 13, James went to work in the coal mines to help support his brothers and sisters, eventually becoming a schoolteacher and principal. He studied the law at night, passed the bar and established Powell Law in 1906 on the principles of honor, integrity and trust – principles practiced by three generations of Powell attorneys. James Powell believed that lawyers have a duty to provide legal services to the needy, and the firm has continued his commitment to pro bono work through three generations. Over the years, Powell Law has been honored numerous times with pro bono awards from the Lackawanna Bar Association and Pennsylvania Bar Association. Although individual lawyers have been recognized, Powell Law is the only firm ever to be given the award in LackawannaCounty. (See our Newsletter for more details) James Powell son, the late Christopher T. Powell Sr., is widely regarded as the greatest civil and criminal trial lawyer in the history of LackawannaCounty, a physically imposing man whose fierce advocacy, blind loyalty to his client’s cause and winning record in the courtroom struck fear in the hearts of his rivals. He and his brother, James J. Powell Jr., founded Powell & Powell, the forerunner of today’s Powell Law. (Read more about Christopher T. Powell Sr. and James J.
