Frequently Asked Questions

Powell Law is here to serve you, and one of our greatest services is information.  Below you will find answers to a number of common questions. If there is a question you would like to ask that is not listed here, go to our Contact Us page and submit your question to us.

When do I need an attorney?

If you have been seriously injured by someone else’s negligence, or you have been accused of a crime, you should talk to an attorney immediately. Waiting to consult with a lawyer can hurt your chances in court.

What can I expect from Powell Law?

You can expect to have your phone calls returned the same day. You can expect your lawyer to have a command of your case and a sympathetic understanding of what it means to you and your family. You will get to know the lawyer or lawyers handling your case, and you will meet with them on a regular basis to discuss progress. Unlike some of our competitors, we do not have paralegals handle your case in place of a lawyer. Your lawyer will be available to you on a 24-hour-a-day basis, if necessary.

How do I know if Powell Law is the right choice for me?

Our law firm has been around since 1906 and our attorneys – now the third generation of Powells – have extensive experience in all types of personal injury cases, as well as criminal defense in both the state and federal courts. The Powell name is well-known and respected in the community, so ask your neighbors and friends. (See our Attorney Profile section for more information.)

Are you related to Attorney Robert Powell who was involved in the kids-for-cash scandal in Luzerne County?

No. We are a different firm and a different family. We are not, nor have we ever been, associated with Attorney Robert Powell or the Powell Law Group in any way. He and his law practice were located outside Hazleton, Pa. We are headquartered in Scranton, Pa., with offices in Stroudsburg, Moscow and Taylor.

What if I just want to talk to a lawyer because I’m not sure if I have a case or want to hire a lawyer yet?

We’re never too busy to answer a question or give a comment free of charge, especially when it’s about whether you should hire a lawyer. Our attorneys will be happy to take your phone call, answer your questions and help you decide whether you need to hire a lawyer.

How long will my personal injury or worker’s compensation case take?

It depends on the complexity of the case, but we promise we will do everything in our power to move your case along and get you the compensation you deserve as quickly as possible.

How do I pay for an attorney?

In personal injury matters, our attorneys get paid on a contingency fee basis, which means we get paid only if we win your case and recover money for you. Workers’ compensation and Social Security disability matters are handled similarly.

In criminal cases, the amount of your lawyer’s fee will be made known to you when you decide to hire us, and payment will be due before the attorney enters an appearance on your behalf.

How do I prepare for my first visit?

Bring everything you think you might need. A lot of wasted time is spent asking for material that you have at home. For instance, in an automobile accident case, we would like the police report, a copy of your insurance policy, and names of doctors and any medical bills you have received.

Is there complete confidentiality?

Absolutely.
