Scranton Law Firm Honored for Representing Needy Clients
March 11, 2010
For the sixth time, Powell Law has been honored by the Lackawanna Bar Association and Lackawanna Pro Bono, Inc., with its Equal Access to Justice Award for providing free legal representation to needy clients. While many individual attorneys have been recognized by the LBA for their pro bono work, Powell Law was the first law firm ever to be honored with the award.
“Our firm’s founders believed attorneys have a duty and obligation to help those who are unable to help themselves,” said Attorney Mark J. Powell. “For three generations, the lawyers at Powell Law have honored that tradition of community service.”
The Lackawanna County award comes on the heels of a Pro Bono Award the firm received last fall from the Pennsylvania Bar Association, which recognizes “the direct legal services and exceptional public service of Pennsylvania attorneys.” Powell Law was one of only three firms in the state to receive the 2009 PBA award. The firm has been honored with the PBA award in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009. In addition, two of the firm’s attorneys, James J. Powell III and Christopher T. Powell Jr., were honored individually by the PBA for their pro bono work in 2004.
All of the firm’s attorneys – James J. Powell III, Christopher T. Powell Jr., Mark J. Powell, Bruce S. Zero and Christopher Osborne – accepted pro bono referrals in 2009, enabling indigent members of the community to obtain legal representation free of charge.
Lackawanna Bar Association Honors Firm with Fifth Pro Bono Award
February 6, 2009
Powell Law has been awarded a fifth Equal Access to Justice Award by the Lackawanna Bar Association for its pro bono work representing needy clients.
Powell Law has a long history of community service dating back to its founding in 1906 by Attorney James J. Powell Sr. The Equal Access to Justice Award has been given to Powell Law five times because all of the firm’s attorneys devote legal services to needy families free of charge through Lackawanna County Pro Bono Inc. Although individual lawyers have been recognized, Powell Law is the only firm ever to be given the award in Lackawanna County.

Powell Law was the only law firm to receive the award in 2003, although individual attorneys throughout Pennsylvania were similarly honored. Each of the Powell firm's five attorneys – James J. Powell III, Mark J. Powell, Bruce S. Zero, Christopher T. Powell Jr. and Christopher Osborne – accepted pro bono referrals in 2002, making it possible for indigent members of the community to receive the representation they so desperately need.
Powell Law was also the first law firm ever to be recognized with the Equal Access to Justice Award presented by the Lackawanna Bar Association and Lackawanna Pro Bono, Inc.
