The Most Common Workers Compensation Injuries

There are many types of work-related injuries, and the attorneys at Powell Law have handled many of them in their 110 years of practice. Workers experience all types of injuries including, but not limited to, cuts, abrasions, broken bones, sprains, back injuries, burns, carpal tunnel syndrome, loss of vision, loss of hearing, loss of limb, brain injuries, and spinal cord damage.

A workplace is often a hazardous place, even office or desk jobs carry risk. OSHA reported that almost 4,700 were killed in the workplace in 2014, and significantly more suffered serious injuries. These statistics demonstrate the potential dangers to which any workplace may expose a worker. Determining the type of injury, its causes, and the party(s) responsible is an important analysis in ensuring an injured worker receives all deserved and just compensation after a workplace accident.

The top five work-related injuries as a percentage of total claims are:

  • strains and sprains (30 percent)
  • cuts or punctures (19 percent)
  • contusions (12 percent)
  • fractures (5 percent)
  • inflammation (5 percent)

Workers may also suffer soft-tissue injuries, which generally involve the stretching or tearing of muscles, tendons, or ligaments. These injuries historically may not be immediately apparent after an accident, with pain and symptoms appearing after some period of time following the occurrence of the injury. Soft tissue injuries may not be externally visible, nor appear on x-rays or other imaging.

Overexertion and falls are the two biggest causes of workers’ compensation claims. Injuries from objects or equipment rank third in workplace injury causes and claims costs. There are four employment types that account for 20% of the total number of injuries. These jobs are high-risk because of their level of physical activity and exposure to dangerous situations:

  • Police/Security officers;
  • Nursing Aides/Orderlies/Attendants;
  • Janitors/Cleaners; and
  • Tractor-Trailer/Heavy Truck drivers.
