The Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program offers free training to all Pennsylvania residents and active duty military personnel with a class Motorcycle Learner’s permit or motorcycle license. The program offers extensive rider education to motorcycle drivers of all levels and includes new, semi-experienced, three-wheeled, and advanced riders.
Classes are offered throughout the full year at multiple training sites throughout Pennsylvania with class schedules posted 4-6 weeks in advance. Participants who successfully complete the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program’s courses may be eligible for insurance premium discounts through participating insurance companies.
NEW RIDERS
There are four “Total Control Introduction to Riding” courses available for new motorcyclists.
All four courses include both classroom and on-cycle instruction. The goal of these classes is to help inexperienced riders learn intermediate-level skills required to safely operate a full-sized motorcycle and understand the basic psychology of riding to help make better choices on the road.
RETURNING RIDERS
A substantial number of people rode at an earlier age and then stopped riding. Some of these individuals have longed to return to riding but may hesitate based on their inactivity. The Total Control Intermediate Riding Clinic (Total Control IRC) may be the appropriate course for riders that have recently decided to return to riding. This course includes both classroom and on-cycle instruction. Newer, active riders wishing to improve their skills may also find valuable instruction through the IRC course.
Total Control IRC provides instruction of those intermediate-level skills required to safely operate a full-sized motorcycle. It also aspires to help less-experienced riders understand the basic psychology of riding so they are better equipped to make better choices while on the road. Topics covered by the course include having a proper mental state, understanding two-wheeled vehicle dynamics, cornering strategies for multiple types of turns, emergency braking, and evasive maneuvers.
Course participants must provide their own motorcycle, proof of insurance and protective riding gear. If they pass the skill evaluation at the course’s completion, they receive a completion card and earn their motorcycle license, thus waiving the on-cycle skills test at the local Driver License Center (DLC).
