Court upholds $5.9 million verdict in car crash

SCRANTON — The state Superior Court upheld a $5.9 million verdict against Ford Motor Co. for a crash that seriously injured a Covington Twp. man.

John Cancelleri, then 83, was left partially paralyzed when the air bag in his 2005 Ford Sable failed to deploy after the car collided with a vehicle in Roaring Brook Twp. in August 2010, according to a lawsuit filed in Lackawanna County Court.

The suit alleged the air bag was defective, which caused Mr. Cancelleri to strike his head and injure his spinal cord. A jury heard eight days of testimony in August 2014 and awarded $4.4 million to Mr. Cancelleri and $1.5 million to his wife.

Ford appealed the verdict, arguing it was improperly prevented from presenting certain evidence. The court on Thursday rejected those claims.
