Firm Carries on Tradition of Pro Bono Representation

Since its founding in 1906, the attorneys at Powell Law have been dedicated to providing free, pro bono representation to clients throughout the greater Scranton area.

“Our firm’s founders, particularly my grandfather who started our firm, believed we have a duty and obligation to help those who are unable to help themselves,” says Attorney Christopher T. Powell. “For three generations, the lawyers at Powell Law have honored that tradition of community service by representing clients who couldn’t otherwise afford to hire a lawyer.”

Nearly every year since 2003, Powell Law has been honored by the Lackawanna Bar Association and Lackawanna Pro Bono Inc. with its “Equal Access to Justice Award”. While many individual attorneys have been recognized by the LBA for their pro bono work, Powell Law was the first firm ever to be honored with the award.

In addition to the Lackawanna County recognition, the firm has also been honored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association with its annual Pro Bono Award for “exceptional public service.” Powell Law has consistently been one of only a handful of firms in the state to receive the PBA award. In addition, two of the firm’s attorneys, James J. Powell III and Christopher T. Powell Jr., have been honored individually by the PBA for their pro bono work.

All of the firm’s attorneys accept pro bono referrals, enabling less fortunate members of the community to obtain legal representation free of charge in civil matters.
